Service Description
English language studies in the intermediate grades includes grammar, vocabulary, and composition. Students will also cover topics such as public speaking, literary analysis, citing sources, and writing reports. In the intermediate grades, students may also study myths, drama, novels, short stories, and read closely from rich and challenging grade-level texts, with guidance when text is particularly demanding. Students will explore and complete the following units of study: - Short Writing: Poetry, Articles, Short Stories (10 weeks) Beginning literary analysis, looking for evidence, paragraph construction, dialect, rhythm Poetic terms: iambic pentameter, rhythm, rhyme scheme, blank verse - Novel Study: The Outsiders (6 weeks) Paragraphs and five-paragraph essay, narrative writing, setting, character development, conflict, plot structure, imagery, and figurative language - Play Study: Romeo and Juliet (6 weeks) Scene and dialogue development; Theatre terms: blocking, monologue, soliloquy, dialogue, dramatic irony - Independent Novel Study (on-going) Reading and responding to literature, metacognitive skills, point of view, vocabulary development, oral discussions
